I would like to reiterate my earlier contention that the use of your weapons against me is completely without merit!

Anyone over the age of 15 can probably remember those beautiful, bygone days called The Nineties. They were a magical time of slap bracelets, torn jeans, and great cartoons. Why, who among us does not recall fondly our first FPS (which was either DOOM or Quake) or our first Block Buster Action movie? Yes, the Nineties were indeed a fantastic age of 2D graphics, cartoon violence, good music and school shootings. It was a great time to be alive.

This was made moreso by a show that is very dear to my heart. It was a very simple show. You didn’t come here to watch flashy graphics or great plots, no sir. In fact, there was hardly a plot at all. To the casual observer, it probably wouldn’t have made much sense at all. This show, my friends, was MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATRE 3000.

In a not too distant future…

Mystery Science Theatere 3000 (MST3K) was a show about a man trapped in space with a bunch of robots who was forced to watch terrible movie after terrible movie. The only thing keeping those poor fellows sane was their sense of humor. Using rapiers made from their razor sharp intellects, they would mercilessly tear to shreads each and every film they observed, and without fail, it was hilarious.

Well, until it got cancelled.

Yes, like all good things MST3K was eventually cancelled (after being picked up by several networks and then run into the ground). Luckily, however, it lives on in DVDs and the glorious internet. A great list of them can be found here:

http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=MST3K

For those of you who have never seen an MST, I suggest episode 820, SPACE MUTINY.

Many of us fans, though, have long awaited the triumphant return of our favorite series. Well, my friends, your prayers have been answered.

Kind of. http://www.rifftrax.com/

Rifftrax is the creation of Mike Nelson, star and head writer of MST3K. It’s one part Wizard People, one part MST. You rent a movie (through a service such as Netflix) and you buy the track, then download it. Then, while watching the movie, you play the downloaded track over the audio, just like MST3K. For two dollars a track, it seems like quite a bargain! And for people who love MST3K, this definately seems like a deal that should not be passed up.

Awesome Blossom. Extra Awesome.

September 12, 2006

This post is about two things:
1) The Office
2) How awesome I am.

Number one, The Office is returning soon. Rumor has it that we get to visit Dwight’s family beet farm and meet some of his family. I think I’ll watch everyone of them in hopes to see this episode. Actually, I’ll watch them all anyways. Point is, there’s always that show or that movie that wins all those awards, be it Emmy’s or Oscars, that sucks really bad. And everyone from Hollywood (or wherever it is they make this crap) go around ranting and raving like it’s the greatest thing to ever happen. Of course, being that I tend to want to see things that get good reviews (for the most part), I go and watch said crappy show or movie that received such awards and reviews. Movies like Titanic (that movie blew so hard) constantly get these awesome reviews and I watch them (though it did take me like seven years to see Titanic). The point is that these movies all end up sucking real bad, minus a few. The entire reason for that explanation was to say this, The Office is one of those few exceptions. Although it got so many freaking awards, the show deserves them. I don’t think I can think of a better show on television right now. Or atleast one that I continually watch and rewatch and rewatch. I’m just saying that you should watch it. September the twenty first at eight thirty, post meridiem.

On to item two. To make it blunt, I designed a shirt. Sort of. More like a potential shirt. It can only be a shirt if people like you (who obviously either know me or care enough to keep reading this far) vote on it on the website. If it wins the ongoing competition, I get lots of money. Ponit being, go vote for it. Here’s the link in a fun picture.

“Breaking News”: Sony to be All Up Ons at Tokyo Game Show

September 8, 2006

Public Unimpressed Because No One Can Afford a PS3 anyway.

Posted by Brandon

There are rumblings on the internets that Sony is going to be making up for its depressingly lackluster showing at this years E3 by releasing a slew of playable content at this year’s Tokyo Game Show. This is definitely exciting news for the dozens of people who can afford a Playstation 3 and I will most assuredly be keeping an eye at the content they release because I hate myself and dream only of things I can never have.

PS3
DAMN YOU SONY!!!!1

Lately Sony seems to be stumbling through blunder after blunder: yanking up the price in Europe, not including important components, and just generally being Sony. With many loyal fans leaving in droves, perhaps TGS will be the turning point for Sony and everyone will once again flock to them and bathe in the effervescent glow of their Sony equipped entertainment-centers.

Probably Microsoft will just release something about Halo and once again Sony will be overlooked like your retard cousin at the family reunion. You know the one: no one directly looks at them and just ignores as much as possible because the pain of seeing something so messed up is too painful.

Random Album Encounter Volume One: “28″

September 4, 2006

Posted by Brad.

Now that I’m an oh-so-hip college student, all of my local used record stores are less than a ten minute walk away! With this newfound ability I find myself stealing a lot less music, and finding a lot more new artists I never heard of, but like, or artists that I had heard of before, but had never given a listen, such as the glorious Archers of Loaf.

But this new segment, Random Album Encounter, isn’t about that. In fact, “random” doesn’t really belong in the name. The only way the name makes sense is if you’re familiar to Role Playing Games.Nerdiness aside, this segment goes like this. I’m in a record store. I’m doing the shuffle through the titles in stock. I come across something that looks pretty, or interesting, that I’ve never heard before. I admit I’ve spent much more money on worse things (Alien Hominid for Gamecube for example, good game, bad price). I then drop around nine or ten dollars on something which I have next to no idea what I’m going to get. And that in a nutshell is Random Album Encounter.

<3 Good music.

For our first installment I give you… The album “28″ by Aoki Takamasa + Tujiko Noriko. I was browsing through the various records, and here I find this tantalizing cover art sitting in the front of the row, looking rather lonely. If they think college students will buy this, it can’t be that bad, right? I thumb behind it. It’s the only copy of the only album there by this mystery-duo. So along with three other albums that I’ve been meaning to buy, I take this one up to the register.

I put the disc into my desktop computer. The tracklist starts with “Fly 2″. I’m greeted by an electric effect, followed by some Japanese mumblings that I think even brame could stand. Ambient, pretty, nice, soothing. A short song. Probably what could be considered an intro track. We move on to “Vinyl Words”. Reverse effects. Actual singing. Overall a kind of Sigur Ros kind of feel to it, except that it’s… more soothing. Makes some sense. I take a look at the insert. How nice, an actual English translation. Nice little lyrics. The Postal Service type effects. Buzzes, clicks, delicious synth stuff. I really like this sort of music. A search for the album art to put into iTunes gives me a yield, similar searches are and The Knife and Portishead. Wilson likes that second one. I seem to remember some talk of The Knife. Tujiko Noriko is the main artist, apparently. A visit to some related sites shows she’s released quite a few albums. Who knows if they’ve seen any sort of British or stateside release. Regardless, “When the Night Comes” is now playing, and I’m still getting that good vibe. Good stuff to listen to on a night with your sweetheart, or right before you’re about to go to bed. Kind of reminds me of the song “66db” by Yuki, perhaps a little bit less poppy. We move on through the tracks, and still more of the same awesome stuff, the next is a bit more upbeat, the next down. “26th Floor” is a most interesting take on a sort of talk track. That is, lots of beats for a talk track. Well thought out words. Very nice. We’re treated with two more awesome tracks after that.

If you didn’t notice, I really like this album. A lot. And I intend to seek out more from the artist, with high hopes that it will be as high quality as the music found in “28″. So, in conclusion, the album is awesome, and it is one of my favorite finds ever (that is, without the consultation of another, but even then it’s up there). If you like slower chill-out music, and don’t mind some Japanese (or in my case, enjoy it), then you wouldn’t go wrong to check out this album.

But don’t take my word for it! Visit your local library!
